October 2015

We were very proud when the results from the recently judged ZSA Northern Area Flock Competition results were announced.

Large Flock

  • 1st Prize Ewes

  • 1st Prize Ewe Lambs

  • 1st Prize Stock Ram - Greenhill Blakeney

We  were then named the Champion Large Flock and also the Overall Flock Competition Champion 2015.

After judging, the judge, Stuart Craig (Eildon Hill) stated;

'The flock ewes are tremendous on their legs, markings nearly all perfect and some fantastic tight skins amongst them. The ewe lambs are nearly all show quality with really tight skins, very mobile and sparky. Stock ram Greenhill Blakeney is tall and bold with a real presence to him. He's great on his legs with a nice tight dark fleece.'

Great News from Carlisle in-lamb sale. Brookdene Zwartbles with whom we share Pedrog sold a ewe lamb at 1500gns. The lamb, Brookdene Ann, sired by Black Ppepper out of a Holmlea sired ewe was breed champion at Otley at her only show this year, before standing 1st and Reserve Champion at the pre sale show.

August 2013Greenhill Alisha became the first female we have ever sold at Carlisle Breed Sale today, she has gone to the Ulster flock in Northern Ireland.

Aphrodite stood 1st Prize in a large and strong Ewe lamb class and then Reserve Female Champion at the sale, and was sold to the Cairness Flock in the North of Scotland.

Aldaniti was also sold to Hannah Sloan Top Notch flock, we wish all purchasers of our sheep good luck and longevity with them. He has now gone on to sire a Reserve Breed Champion at the Royal Highland Show before being sold to Norther Ireland

JULY 2013

Back home from an absolutely scorching Yorkshire Show, oh how different to 12 months ago!! We were all wet again in the ewe lamb class, but the water was coming from inside out this year!! It was without doubt the hottest that I have ever shown sheep in.
Not only have we had a great time with friends from near and far, but we had some great results as well. 3rd place (Walnut) in the biggest class of the day, the shearling ewe class, with 24 out of the 27 entries forward, 2nd place (Apollo) in the ewe lamb class with 17(I think) forward, not only that, but 1st and 3rd placed lambs were sired by Beech Hay Black Pepper our stock ram, then to cap the afternoon off, 2nd place in the group class with three lambs (Artemis, Apollo and Alisha) left us well pleased.
Sophie got 4th in a big young handlers class, and has enjoyed her first full week away at a show - to the disgust of her brother who told her she should go home with mum on Wednesday........

To top the week off, it was great to hear that Limestone Zwartbles in Southern Ireland have won Supreme Southern Ireland Zwartbles Ram lamb Champion with Limestone Angus, as well as 1st and 3rd place ewe lambs with Limestone Abby and Alice respectively at Clonmel Show all sired by Black Pepper, many congratulations to them.

The show season is finally getting going and Sophie and Harry attended Arthington Show today and after dumping them to mamnage on their own, I went to the Open Day at The Quarrydale Flock in Trawden, Lancashire. The gruesome twosome did well on their own, in the Any Other Continental Classes, with a commercial breeder judging them they gained 1st and 2nd in the Shearling and Above Ewe Class, 1st Prize Ram Lamb and 2nd and 3rd ewe Lambs. They were against Beltex, so chalk and cheese really, but it was quite pleasing overall.

We have a new kid on the block!!

Harry has established his own flock with the 'purchase' of three ewe Hoggs from Greenhill (purchase being used in the loosest term).

His flock no. is 999, and will be known as The Bingheleia Flock.

Bingley, the town where we live appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Bingheleia".

I wish him loads of luck, with the knowledge that he will do his best, and a dad who will help him all he can!

Lambing is now done for this year, and we seem to have plenty of ram lambs about - unfortunately, but we are sure we will pick a few nice ones out for the show ring and sales. As well as some by Pedrog, our returns were to Raymond Heigh's East Middle Ram 133-121P, so we are hoping they might just be something nice for later on, he certainly hasn't done Raymond any harm.

We had a bit of a swap of ram's, Raymond using Black Pepper on some of both Pedrog's and East Middl'e daughters, so we shall see how they cross the other way as well.

We seem to have got away without too many problems with the Z's, but we know that people up and down the country are having an horrendous time with Schmallenhurg virus, and we wish them well.

Whilst we seem to have got away with it early on, we have just lambed our Charollais, and whilst we have not had the misformed things that people are reporting, we have not had a good time and have had plenty of disasters, but hey ho, on we go! Forget the disasters, let's get on with the living!!!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is the future, now is a gift, that's why it's called the present!!
